Abstract

This study focuses on the effects of sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) on erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction. We studied the effect of sildenafil and tadalafil on erectile function in the healthy men. Erectile function was measured at baseline and at three different time points: 1 month after treatment, 3 months after treatment and 1 year after treatment. After treatment, there was no significant difference in erectile function at 1 month. After 3 months, erectile function was significantly better for sildenafil (p <0.001) than for tadalafil (p <0.001) but did not change after 3 months. After 1 year, erectile function was significantly better for sildenafil (p <0.001) than for tadalafil (p<0.001) but did not change after 3 months. Erectile function should be assessed every 6 months in men with erectile dysfunction if there is any sign of sexual dysfunction, and any clinical signs of erectile dysfunction should be addressed.

Introduction

The erectile response of the male sex organ is characterized by a positive response to sexual stimulation. Sildenafil, the first phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, is a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and is widely used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction [–]. Sildenafil has been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and has a low potential to cause adverse effects. A large trial of sildenafil and tadalafil has found that sildenafil is as efficacious as tadalafil but not as effective as sildenafil [–]. In this study, we investigated the effects of sildenafil and tadalafil on erectile function in healthy men with erectile dysfunction.
